Common Mistakes You Make When Washing Clothes Without Knowing

Doing laundry is a common daily task for any family, but not everyone knows how to do it correctly. Here are some common laundry mistakes that we often make.

1. Not sorting the laundry

In addition to separating white clothes and colored clothes, you also need to pay attention to the fabric. For example, woolen clothes should be washed separately from regular clothes. You should also not wash towels with synthetic fabric items.

2. Scrubbing stains on clothes incorrectly

When accidentally dirtying clothes, you usually have the habit of washing them immediately with water and rubbing the stain. However, you may create a tear when vigorously rubbing the stain. Be gentle with stubborn stains, the best way to deal with it is to place a clean cloth or paper towel on top to absorb the dirt.

3. Using too much detergent/fabric softener

 

Remember to use the necessary amount of detergent, to save and avoid creating too much foam.

 

Many people have the habit of pouring a lot of detergent because they are afraid that it is not enough to clean the clothes. This can create more foam than necessary, and it will collect dirt when washing and deposit on the clothes after the washing machine is done. Then, the clothes may become dirtier, and that is certainly not what you want, right?

4. Not zipping up jackets

Zippers on clothes need to be fully zipped up before putting them in the washing machine because the teeth on the zipper can easily break the fabric.

 

5. Keeping buttons buttoned before washing

 

Zip it up, unbutton it.

You should always unbutton jackets and unbutton pants before putting them in the washing machine because if not, the buttons can easily come off and stretch the buttonholes, making the clothes look worn out.

6. Overusing stain remover

Stain remover makes the fabric less durable and more prone to tearing. You can try an alternative method by putting clothes in water and boiling it. All you need is a large pot, add a few drops of lemon juice, bring it to a boil and then put the clothes in.

7. Machine-washing swimwear

 

For clothes with stretchy fabric, it’s best to hand wash them.

 

Swimwear, men’s briefs, or any garment made of spandex or elastane (highly elastic synthetic fibers) should not be machine washed. Instead, you should hand wash these items with cold water.

8. Pausing the washing machine midway

Many people have this habit because they think that the rotating drum will damage the machine. However, this thinking is completely wrong. Letting the washing machine run for the full cycle will help reduce the amount of electricity consumed because the machine will utilize the residual heat after the previous cycle.

9. Washing pillows and blankets with one load of water

 

If not washed twice, soap can still remain in the inner fur layer.

If you wash down pillows with a washing machine, remember to use the double wash function because down feathers have very high absorbency and will prevent soap foam from completely washing away in the fabric.

10. Washing clothes without sorting first

Do you usually put all the clothes in the machine without sorting them by clothing type? Then you may have to turn the washed pile of clothes upside down to find a pair of socks. To avoid this, put socks or small-sized items in the washing machine first. You will surely be surprised by the result that this small action brings.

11. Using fabric softener when washing towels

The chemicals in fabric softeners reduce the absorbency of the towels, so it is best not to use fabric softeners for towels.

12. Washing too many clothes at once

 

Only wash a sufficient amount of clothes, not too many.

 

In today’s busy life, there may be times when you want to wash a large amount of clothes but do not have enough time. Some people will stuff all the clothes in at once to save time, but they do not know that this action will cause the machine to be overloaded, which can lead to malfunctions.

13. Not being careful when washing windbreakers and puffer jackets

To avoid damaging the structure and shape of the clothes, you can put 3 tennis balls in the washing machine. This will also help clean any soap foam that can accumulate on the fabric.

14. Thinking that the more expensive the detergent, the better

 

Try using easily accessible household items instead of laundry detergent to save more.

 

Many everyday detergents and laundry detergents can be replaced with other cheaper substances that are readily available around us: salt brightens clothes, or chalk helps remove long-standing stains. Lemon juice can also make fabrics softer and have a natural fragrance.

15. Neglecting to clean the washing machine for a long time

 

Leaving the washing machine without scrubbing will easily cause it to malfunction.

 

Regularly cleaning the washing machine is very important. Soap residues often accumulate in the nooks and crannies of the machine. Because some parts of the machine can be easily disassembled, occasionally remove them and scrub them. 

Do not close the lid right after washing to let the machine dry. Once a year, run the machine cleaning mode with hot water and vinegar. This will prevent the washing machine from malfunctioning and make it more durable.
